CLUB STORY
New York City Football Club are the first and only Major League Soccer (MLS) team to play in New York’s five boroughs and were the second club to join the City Football Group (CFG) family when they became the League’s 20th franchise in May 2013. The Club was created with a deep commitment to give back to New Yorkers through beautiful football, trailblazing spirit and football citizenship.
After the 2015 inaugural season, NYCFC quickly made history in one of the world's most competitive and proudest sporting cities by winning the 2021 MLS Cup. In doing so, NYCFC brought home the first major league championship sports trophy to New York in more than a decade and cemented itself as a powerful force in the League.
In 2027, the Club aims to move into the City’s first soccer-specific stadium in Willets Point in the borough of Queens. The new venue includes a 25,000-capacity stadium close to the New York Mets baseball stadium and the US Open tennis complex.
NYCFC began the Boys Academy program during the Club’s inaugural season – and Girls Academy in 2017. The Academy is focused on identifying, developing and producing the best local youth soccer players in the New York metropolitan area.
The Club’s youth system offers a professional and competitive pathway to the game's highest levels. The Boys Academy has seen unprecedented success, winning back-to-back Under-19 National Championships – the first club to do so in that age group. Several homegrown players have graduated to NYCFC’s first team, and several Academy products have signed for top teams in Europe, demonstrating an impressive track record of developing young talent.
NYCFC has become part of the fabric of New York City through the Club’s community work. Since 2014, City in the Community (CITC) Foundation NY has helped tens of thousands of youngsters, established free soccer programming in communities across the five boroughs, created free spaces to play the sport and helped donate hundreds of thousands of meals to residents in the South Bronx. This builds on CFG’s long-standing tradition of community initiatives in NYC, including the community pitch built by Manchester City and the UAE Embassy in 2010 before NYCFC was launched.
